Strategies for Recruiting Members By Mary Waller, Chicago Area Vice President

Communicate with students in your school, especially those in business classes, as well as students at local middle schools, to encourage an understanding of FBLA as an organization and ultimately to increase membership.

In your school, take advantage of the school intercom to remind members about upcoming events and recognize members for their successes, while also advertising FBLA. Request an article in your school newspaper to talk about competitions, service projects, and other events in your chapter. Have them mention the names of people involved so that interested students will know who to ask if they are interested in joining. The positive publicity will make students more aware of what FBLA does, and will glean a more members.

Make an impression on fellow students by wearing FBLA t-shirts or business attire. Ask your members wear the t-shirts or professional dress on the same day so that other students ask about them, and then take the opportunity to talk about recent, as well as planned, activities. Maintain an up-to-date and appealing bulletin board so that potential members will know where to look if they are considering joining FBLA. Post pictures from the latest activities, as well as awards, news, and a calendar displaying upcoming events and meetings.

Start early. Be there for local middle school chapters, and even middle schools who are not involved in FBLA. Go to middle schools whose students might go to your high school in a few years and talk to classes about FBLA. Explain the kinds of activities you do, the goals you hope to accomplish, and what you learn from being a part of the organization. The earlier you expose students to FBLA, the more likely they will be to join if they come to your high school. Have your most involved members set up a booth at freshman orientation and registration. Just before school starts many students will be looking for activities and clubs to join for the school year. If your school has a club fair, set up a table, and be prepared. Have a board with pictures from past years and a list of events you hope to have over the next few months. It's never too soon to start recruiting!
